Lovely Sunday lunch with a big group. Staff were very friendly! It was good value. I would highly recommend. I will definitely be back for food and drinks.
We loved this place. One of the most memorable meals of our 3 week UK trip. Received the warmest customer service that I think I've ever had. Our food was delicious. If we'd had more time in York we would have eaten there again.
Friendly clean and good food. Good value and a good choice of different dishes. Realy nice atmosphere with good decor. I will go back again.
Great service and good selection of well presented beers. Food good, particularly pleased by the quality of the freshly cooked vegetables. Ample portions. Relaxed atmosphere.
Lovely homemade Sunday lunch very friendly and polite staff highly recommend a visit so hard to find homemade Sunday lunch these days in city centres
A warm and friendly atmosphere in a historic pub, close to all the other attraction of York, the food and drinks are very reasonable with a good menu, we look forward to eating there again on our next visit to York
Service was excellent.- friendly and attentive but not over powering.Food good value and given time to eat at our own pace Will definitely go again.
Booked for Sunday lunch. Starters were gorgeous but mains ok, beef was supposed to be pink but it was more well done and quite chewy. Yorkshire puddings were huge but a disappointment as not crispy they were soft. Sticky toffee pudding a little hard due to being over microwaved and service slightly slow but it was busy with only 1-2 girls working in lounge area Overall a good experience and I would probably return to try again even if just for the gin :-)
We were really looking forward to a roast Sunday lunch and chose to the Royal Oak in York City Centre. We had pre-booked and arrived on time. Friendly staff showed us to our reserved table and efficiently took our order for food and drinks. The starters arrived and were very good. Then disaster struck. We were told there would be a 20 minute delay before our roast pork mains arrived. Yorkshire Puddings were mentioned. After approaching 30 minutes we were then informed there would be a further 10 minute delay. We were offered a reduction (non quantified) if we would accept our meal without Yorkshire Puddings. When you’ve paid over £5 to park, and are in York, 10 minutes seemed reasonable to wait. However after 20 minutes we had had enough – well actually we’d just had drinks and starters – and left, advising the staff and said we wouldn’t be paying for anything we’d had. They were apologetic and didn’t asked for any payment. If we had requested something exotic there might have been an excuse but this is a pub which uses its traditional Englishness (14th Century building etc). Surely they serve roast lunches every week and those will always include Yorkshire Puddings. I can’t imagine there were more customers than usual so how could they get their planning of meals so wrong? So after 1 hour 20 mins we were outside, hungrier than ever. Fortunately, on the corner of the street was York Roast Company. Ok so it was more McDonalds style in a cardboard box but we got an excellent pork roast and vegetables served promptly – and it was served in a Yorkshire Pudding!
Great food and service would come again I had a Lovely roast beef dinner with enormous Yorkshire puddings and my companion had really good fish and triple cooked chips
We had a great evening. Friendly atmosphere and staff. The food and beer were excellent Thank you. Would highly recommend the Old Peculiar very good
Delicious food. Amazing service! Would certainly return and highly recommend! We had the Sunday lunch and one of their wonderful selection of fine cask ales
Lovely food - good friendly service - interesting pub with great atmosphere and live music. It made for a good evening with friends and we will be back!
The Royal Oak is a traditional pub serving food. The menu offered a variety of options and our party were not disappointed with their food, delicious and freshly cooked, also good value for money. I would certainly recommend it
The food was very good cooked to perfection and well presented. Made to feel welcome nothing to much trouble. The pub/restaurant is perfect well recommended perfect
Great location, varied menu, friendly and efficient service. We were in the "Snug" to celebrate a birthday - got a candle on the birthday girl's dessert!
Set in a perfect location when exploring the City Centre of York, the Royal Oak is beautifully traditional but perfectly kept. We were looking for a traditional Sunday lunch and that is exactly what we got, including the best children's portion of a Sunday lunch and pudding. Highly recommend it for a family lunch. The landlord was very welcoming and gave us a useful historic update on York Minster.
great food and a good atmosphere. So nice to be in a proper old style pub and not a chain. The home made fish cakes were tasty and the home made yorkshire pudding delicious. would recommend. Staff very friendly
We enjoyed our late Sunday lunch. The only disappointment was that there were only two portions of roast meat left. They must have had a busy day.
The reservation was made based on the menu, but on arrival there were no lamb shanks. We left without eating the staff conceded this was an issue
We both had fillet steak, food tasted great, well cooked, generous portions. Drinks were reasonably priced. Service was prompt and friendly. Would definitely eat here again.
Lovely food and cosy atmosphere. Excellent location which is central to all major York attractions. Service was great, couldn't fault them. Went for a birthday meal.
The staff are friendly, the food was cooked to perfection, I liked the idea that no-one disturbed us whilst we were eating, and it felt relaxed. There was a wide range of food available, and local specialities. I would highly recommend this place and I look forward to going again.
Friendly service, wide choice on the menu, good quality food in a pleasant pub environment with a good choice of beers, will definitely be back
Upon arrival at 11:55 we found the front door locked with no visible indication of opening times, when a member of the royal oak team came out to out to put the a frame outside he informed me 'not open yet' when I moved towards the door. When I informed him we had a booked for 12 noon he replied 'still got 9 minutes to wait' which was a little short tempered and unnecessary but proceeded to wait until 12:05 when the pub opened. Once inside we were seated promptly, service was efficient and polite. Food was excellent and the surprise of free prosecco and desert for mothers was a lovely and very considerate surprise on nothing Sunday. The staff were attentive without being intrusive and added to the enjoyment of our meal Russ
Good food, attentive but not overbearing service. Gave us nice gaps between courses, did not feel at all rushed. Being Valentines day the special menu was on, it was excellent.
The place was welcoming, warm and friendly - very pleasant and helpful staff. Eating area is a little on the small side but they seemed to cope with ensuring people were seated. Food very good and reasonably priced but my plate was a little on the cool side for me.
A nice Sunday Lunch with excellent ale to boot. Lots of veg , lovely gravy and a huge Yorkshire...this really hits the spot! Well worth a try
Good Good, excellent service, value for money, would not recommend the prawn and Tomato starter, but the belly pork was wonderful. My friends enjoyed their starters and mains.
Can't fault them, we like the Royal Oak because they get the basics right. What could be more pleasurable than a good steak washed down with wine?
Had a pint of abbots ale in bar before meal which was well kept and staff very curtious. Selected home made parsnip soup came with toasted bloomer excellent followed by homemade mince pie with mash & veg beautifull
Some of our group opted for the Thursday night beer & burger deal, which was very good value at £11.95. The food didn't take long to arrive and all of the food was nice and reasonably priced. The waiting staff were very attentive, making sure we had enough drinks during the night.
Booked on the day on a busy bank holiday for 6 people, service was great thank you. Decent enough pub grub, a bit inconsistent in that some guys had huge meat portions and others had a mean scrimpy portion, we all would have welcomed a bit more veg, and the gravy (whilst nice) was like a tsunami flooding the plates....suggest serve a bit on the plate and a extra jug on the table, it made the presentation look sloppy and a bit off putting.
Read previous reviews which raised my expectations... sadly it didn't live up to them and won't be in a rush to go back there soon
