Enjoyed the restaurant and the meal, would visit there again d
We pre-booked for Sunday lunch as we were warned this place gets busy. When we arrived every table in the dining room was taken proving the popularity we had heard. There were 3 choices of meat and some other items on the menu and they were offering a deal on 2 or 3 courses. We had our 3 yr old in tow so we ploughed straight into the mains as she would never have waited for us to enjoy what was a nice choice of starters. The roasts were piping hot and plentiful. We especially loved the cauliflower cheese which we fought over the largest piece and the mini was delighted with her pared down version of our dishes which was not an option on the child’s menu however they accommodated just for us. They included an ice cream for the small as part of a child’s menu deal which was a nice touch considering we had ordered off menu and so we decided to also indulge in a sweet course. My Belgian waffle looked so good that food envy took over the other two and we all demolished it within seconds. Needless to say we were glad of the walk home. The Royal Oak staff were attentive, welcoming and delightful and our 2 course meal came to less than £40 for 2 adults and 1 child. What a bargain for freshly prepared and well cooked food. We will certainly we recommending and coming back. Well done.
The food and service was lovely. Very personable and pleasant wait staff. This is my second visit to The Royal Oak. The ambiance is friendly. I would return again for drinks and food.
They never let us down. Quality pub food at its best, now while there are refurbs coming we hope the menu won't change, can't go wrong here!
Good food and service. Very accommodating as currently changing to new management who are not keen to allow dogs but let us book a table in the snug room with our dog and had the room all to ourselves. Hope they decide to become permanently dog friendly.
The food was excellent if you like Yorkshire pudding that’s the place to go ..only one problem there were 6 of us and we had 2round tables pushed together which was a little difficult ..staff really pleasant ,and will definately visit again when the refurbishment is completed ....
Had the sea bass over crushed potatoes - very enjoyable. Waitresses were very helpful and pleasant. Bar manager was helpful. Can see why it is a busy place and you are advised to book a table on line.
Food was quick, lovely and very fresh. The staff were so friendly, polite and helpful. Would defiantly recommend as brilliant value for money also. Great place.
We went there for dinner. It has delicious food as well as kind and ready to help staff. Really great experience. It is worth the money.
Friendly staff, great value food . Good selection on the menu , went for A firm favourite of fish and chips ,really nice will be going back next time in York
Good night celebrating my father-in-law's 85th birthday. Didn't have a pie of the day, despite being on the menu, nor were all the wines listed available, however running another business in the city centre I can understand as we've also struggled with getting our wine orders in! All happy with the food, would return!
Super food and good value. A little disappointed that 3 menu options were not available at only 6pm. Friendly staff if a little inexperienced, but more than made up for with smiles and willingness to help. Would definitely recommend.
It's just so reassuring that there is the Royal Oak to go to every time. There's a new menu now but the food is still as good as ever, really enjoyed my Barnsley chop.
Outstanding Sunday dinner and service highly recommended!!!! Beef to die for , perfectly cooked !!!!!! Will defo be returning when next time we’re in York
Very friendly and knowledgeable staff. Great service. The food was lovely and the Yorkshire beer very tasty. Can recommend the fish and chips and will visit again when in York.
A very nice meal, and lots of it. The beef was beautifully cooked and the Yorkshire pudding was gorgeous my only complaint however was I like my roast potatoes and vegetables really hot and they were served just warm. However there was plenty of hot gravy to pour over. Didn’t much like the choice of puddings which was disappointing.
Friendly staff, excellent roast with huge portions. Great atmosphere, beautiful pub. Loved everything about being there for Sunday dinner. Would definitely recommend and return another time.
We went with friends and had a lovely meal and a lovely day and would definitely recommend it to friends who want a relaxing day
Fantastic mains, starters a little basic but great service, nice little cosy atmosphere, and great beer. Would definitely go back here next time i visit york
We love it in here, good food every time and we like the atmosphere. And the gin menu :) We will keep on coming back.
Quite disappointed with the Sunday roast. I had heard the adverts on minster fm and looked at the reviews, which were mixed but more positive than negative. We thought the portions were rather small, we are not greedy people, but a Sunday roast should make you feel full ... without the need for a starter or dessert. The gravy came on the dinner not in a jug and it was thin and not very warm The pork crackling was just fat not crispy Very limited veg a few small carrots a bit of broccoli and ... peas and sweetcorn mix ... on a Sunday dinner? No stuffing Beef was gristly. Although one redeeming factor was the fish and chips were very good according to my friend. But, unfortunately we won’t be going again
Food was very poor quality. Did not live up to reviews. Should have been a perfect Sunday lunch but was not enjoyable which rather spoilt the day
The food was delicious and staff incredibly friendly and helpful. The pub itself was lovely and not too packed in the restaurant section which is always a concern when eating out on a holiday. This meant the staff were very attentive and the food and drinks arrived very quickly. Will definitely eat here again and recommend
They never let us down, so glad we have somewhere like the Royal Oak as our go to place of choice when we want good hearty reliable food in York.
A cosy & characterful pub with a relaxing atmosphere. Very friendly and helpful staff. Excellent food at reasonable prices, very fast service. Would highly recommend.
Great food and staff. Sunday lunch excellent. Nice seating very comfortable. Staff very attentive and service e excellent, was nice to have traditional Sunday lunch.
Excellent Sunday lunch, really impressed with the Yorkshire Puds. We were given a table in 'the Snug' - like having our own private room! Service was good.
Lovely meal definitely worth the price. Great staff too! Beautiful building well a visit if your in York to est and we would definitely visit again
It was the bast steak that I have had for a long time will be going back on my next visit to York it is some where that I recamend for food
We had the roast beef Sunday lunch and it was absolutely delicious. The waitress was so cheery. Wish I lived nearer and I would go every week. Thank you to all the staff for a delightful experience.
Great pub with a good little restaurant. The room was warm and cosy and our table was set up for u when I arrived. We had a little wait for the food, around 20 minutes, but we were in catch up mode so time just flew. and it was eventually brought by a very friendly young man. I met with a group of 3 school friends and this venue is one of our favourites - the food is always good and plentiful and not badly priced. We enjoyed ourselves so much last night that we have booked our next meeting already.
NICE TRADITIONAL PUB,THE ROAST BEEF AND YORKSIRE PUDDING WAS GOOD,THE CARROTS WERE TOO HARD AND STILL HAD THE STORKS ON,APART FROM THAT I ENJOYED IT,THE STICKY TOFFEE PUDDING WITH CUSTARD WAS GREAT AND THE PORTER BEER WITH A PLUM TASTE WAS EXCELLENT, ALSO THE SERVICE WAS GOOD. I ENJOYED THE EXPERIENCE!!
This is a lovely pub and the food was really nice. we would return again if we went back to york to visit again . Thank you
Excellent service always a super meal and friendly staff. One of our local favourites. Highly rated for food or drinks. Minimum of 25 words required :)
Slow service, think there was only two staff working. Food good for the price. Up the stairs for the toilets but it’s all a bit grubby up there.
Lovely , cosy place with a historic character. The food was delicious, we had a Christmas meal and it was too big to finish. Staff was friendly and attentive.
The Royal Oak never lets us down, beautiful lamb and beef burgers today with lots of chunky chips and onion rings, cooked to perfection and followed by lovely indulgent sticky toffee pudding. Good beer too, Avocet Ale from Exeter. Very nice pub, lovely people there too.
The food was lovely. The staff were attentive and polite. We had a private area to eat in which was lovely. They also had a fantastic children’s menu.
Lovely food and great staff, we had Sunday lunch, my daughter said it was the best ever (and she is a grumpy teenager). Also good selection of beer which kept my Dad happy.
Exceptional service during a very busy Christmas period, nothing was a bother to them and all our lunches were thoroughly enjoyed, best roast beef in York, we can’t wait to visit again.
Snowing outside, and very busy on a Sunday before Christmas. Roast beef very good with the biggest Yorkshire pudding I have ever experienced. Friendly service and good value.
Good service, good main course, sticky toffee pudding cold in middle. Someone should learn how to use a microwave - puddings are not recoket science!
Everything was great. We were seated on time and our meals were wonderful. The carrot cake was the best I've ever had and the service was terrific.
Lovely pub food in a friendly environment just the tonic to escape from the hustle and bustle of Christmas shopping in York! Enjoyed by all 9 of us!
We we're going to York for the day and wanted somewhere eat. Friends reccomended Royal Oak and we weren't disappointed. Great surroundings, friendly staff and fantastic food. Will definitely be calling again.
Quite a nice environment and atmosphere but average food. Potatoes and veg were underdone, beef was a bit fatty and gravy was a bit of a letdown especially as they left a massive box labelled ‘gravy granules’ on the bar... Yorkshire pudding was nice though. All in all, probably wouldn’t go back, but was alright for £11.
Table for ten on a busy Saturday night service was timely and no mistakes food was good quality no complaint's from anyone in the group good selection of drinks overall a great night out
Although the building and staff were nice, the meal was a real disappointment - undercooked meat and chips and a prawn sauce that appeared to be tinned tomato soup with added chilli - awful! Although we complained there was no offer to replace the meal or a discount so definitely won't be visiting again and would not advise anyone else to try it!
Very friendly staff. Very quick service. Roast dinner was good, but the zesty lemon cheesecake afterwards was awesome. One of the best I've ever had.
Sunday lunch was small and although the Yorkshire pudding was reasonably impressive, the rest of the plate was average at best (thinly sliced pork, minimal veg and few potatoes) Dessert was disappointing, clearly just stuck in a microwave and custard had a thick skin. Nice venue and location but probably wouldn't go back to eat
