An excellent Sunday lunch in a relaxing place, tasty starters, delicious main course, we were too full to manage a pudding but enjoyed a good coffee.

Nice old pub with beamed ceilings lovely friendly staff and good food, only downside presentation could have been better. Would visit again on an evening.

The service as always was spectacularly good and while we had a (very small) problem with one of the dishes it was immediately rectified and the outcome was lovely.

Poor table seating, plus location of our table in corner outside kitchen, whilst there were plenty of other tables available especially as we had taken the time to book (other guests did not). Food very average, not sure if we would go again.

Staff are friendly and professional. Good choice of food on dinner menu plus specials. A little more detail of make-up of the main courses would be helpful. Quality of food very good. Good wine list. Pleasant, unfussy dining room. A relaxed evening.

Our second visit within a short time. Another excellent meal in pleasant surroundings. Makes a change to actually have room to move without colliding with people sat near you. One of our party has a disability which, with all the space, proved not to be an issue. We noticed that all the tables were well spaced - makes a pleasant change!

Warm and welcoming. Children were treated respectfully. Lovely attmosphere. Tables were placed creatively, meaning that it catered for intimate dining as well as larger parties, and both worked well together. The food was superb and there was a varied selection of both starters and main course. The portions were generous - verging on over-generous , and were beautifully cooked. The youngest members of our party declared the sticky toffee pudding to be the best they had ever tasted - and they had tasted many! All in all a lovely experience and one that will most certainly be repeated.

Excellent! We went back hoping that they still had the cajun fish dish with chips and salad. They had it up on their specials board so we were very happy to order it again. Just as delicious as last time. The pub is very quaint and cute inside. Lovely staff. One of our favorite pubs:)

We had not been to the Malt Shovel for some time but decided an hour before to try again for lunch on our Wedding Anniversary. Reserving a table was very easy and efficient. The pub/restaurant is charming, full of character and nicely laid out without table crowding. The menu is varied and reasonably priced. We both chose Sea Bass which was excellent. The service was pleasant, friendly and attentive. We will certainly return and remarked yesterday evening that it is a good place to take visiting friends. We also remarked that it is the best restaurant meal we have experienced for quite a while.

Having eaten here before and being aware of the generous portions we decided to have 4 starters between the three of us. That also left room for a pudding! The food was excellent, as was the service.

The malt Shovel was very welcoming and service was excellent. Our food was delicious and well presented and the choice was very good. Desserts delicious too. My two companions and I enjoyed a very happy and relaxed time over our meal, and nobody hassled us to leave. I would certainly visit the Malt Shovel again and recommend it to my friends.

The Malt Shovel is a traditional old pub in a quiet rural location. Have visited before but the ownership has changed since then and the meals are now Ok but not as good as previously. The pub was quite busy and although the staff were polite and pleasant the service was a little slow.

went for lunch and ordered the roast beef . the meal was excellent in that the meat ,Yorkshire pudding and the roast potatoes were very well cooked and a joy to eat. However the vegetables were not to my taste either undercooked or virtually raw , such is the fashion , I am led to believe .So these were returned with a note for the chef.I was pleasantly surprised to enjoy a sweet on the house , in view of my comments on the main meal.

This was out first visit to The Malt Shovel, we were staying at a B&B in Knaresborough & had picked up the details from their website. We were shattered after a very long journey, but were soon revived by a very warm welcome, excellent wine and a fabulous meal! We both agreed it was the best food we'd had on our week long holiday, it was all beautifully presented, well-cooked and delicious. We will return if we are in the area again and would highly recommend a visit based on our experience.
