We had a family lunch over the weekend, the choice was excellent and portion size generous, desserts in particular. Our lovely waitress couldn't do enough to make sure we had everything we needed, including crayons and colouring sheets for the 5 year old ..it should've been busier, well worth a visit. We will go again.
Everything was great but do you really need a muted TV on? Half way point between us and relations so will visit again (if not in line of sight of offending TV) :)
A lovely country pub with lovely food and excellent service
Great food, great service, beautiful setting and decor. Kept the kids entertained too 👌🏻
Enjoyable family catch up despite it being St.Patricks day. Food as always well presented and delicious. Would appreciate wider choice of bitters including a weaker one ! Would visit again, as halfway between Hertfordshire and Shropshire.
Great service, lovely food. Nice atmosphere and a warm friendly pub.
Greeted very cheerfully, and a nice table had been reserved for us. We enjoyed a very pleasant lunch in nice surroundings. The food was tasty, fresh and well cooked
Extensive menu. Lovely staff. Good quality food. Warm and welcoming
Delicious food, lots to choose from. Very friendly service Excellent value for money
We felt really well looked after on Mother's Day. Although really busy they were very attentive.
Excellent food and service. Would definitely recommend The Malt Shovel.
Firstly, my waitress was great. But my drink order took 15 mins to arrive and food took nearly 50 mins to arrive. It was busy, but as all tables were reserved, it would have been obvious it was going to be a busy night. They definitely need more staff. Also, I know it's a family pub, but there were little kids running outsid, then inside, then outside, then inside... it would be nice to enjoy a relaxing meal...which is what I went for.
First visit, service was excellent, we arrived early and were seated straight away. Food options were varied. We were left for the perfect amount of time to decide on our food choices. Food was decent. We were checked on to ensure everything was ok. Was reasonably busy creating a good buzzy atmosphere. We were acknowledged again on leaving. Thank you all who looked after us today. Only downside was the cockatoo slightly noisy.
Lovely pub, with very friendly staff, and great food. Wish we lived nearer. Special shout out to John and Ellie for their great service.
The Malt Shovel is a lovely pub with great food and fab staff.
The service was excellent The owners were very attentive and helpful The food was amazing
Lovely atmosphere and attentive staff However my steak and ale pie turned out to be chicken and cheese!!!
Excellent service and great food. Couldn’t have been better. We will be back.
Lovely pub with friendly staff. Service was exceptional and food delicious !
Warm welcome, friendly staff, excellent lunch which was great value.
Love this pub , great food and fabulous service. The atmosphere is warm and friendly a great place for lunch or dinner. The sweets are to die for too.
Worth a visit, highly recommend the food and service was excellent
A delicious Sunday roast lamb meal in a restful atmosphere.
Lovely little table out of the way, delicious quick service, great food options, amazing desserts and nice touch to have a shovel! Thank you
We enjoyed it. The Waiting time was the biggest concern.
Great food (despite what I requested not being available !) and excellent service
Comfortable homely surroundings friendly staff ,food was well presented tasty ,the only downfall was the pizza as it was quite doughy and topping quite bland ,my daughter didn't enjoy, bit could highly recommend the Sunday roast
Lovely happy staff. Excellent food. There was too long a wait between courses. Not enough staff to keep the flow of service.
Excellent Sunday lunch. Used to use the pub a lot (as my M40 services) during my working life. Standard still as high as in previous years - nothing negative to say.
Lovely meal with friends. Sat in the corner window recess which is cosy although is a little echoey. Very good service from a lovely new waitress from Ireland. Very friendly. Portions quite large but tasty. Husband had the Irish stew which he loved. Will come again.
Lovely pub. Fabulous food especially desert. Good service too. Great staff. Will be back.
Historic place with an outstanding service, i can not stop recomending this place.
Lovely food and friendly staff with a relaxed atmosphere will definitely be returning soon.
It was great to find that the Malt Shovel still serve good, home cooked food. This was a post-AGM committee dinner and the pub was very accommodating, everyone enjoyed their meal.
Lovely food at affordable prices. Service was excellent. Will definitely go back
First visit to the Malt Shovel. The car park was a little tight but the landlord and waitress were very friendly, the food was great and the portion sizes very generous. Will definitely be going back.
Great meal with fantastic service, particularly enjoyed meeting Harper the cockatoo 😁
The food was really good. Our second visit. Shame the hand held computers were not working properly for the waiting staff and this must have caused a backlog in the kitchen. Told 15 minute wait for puddings. These things happen and we have not been put off going again
Booking a table was easy. There was plenty of choice on the menu and the food was excellent.
A regular meeting place with some friends, regular because it's good. Great food at good prices, friendly staff always make us feel welcome. here's to the next visit.
Good Sunday lunch on a very busy day for the staff. Everyone out in the sun.
Great service , lovely food and delicious cold white wine , just what we wanted.
The food was very enjoyable, the staff were friendly and polite
Food was slow arriving and a lasagne had clearly been kept warm for some time as it was dried and crusted onto the dish. This was brought to the staff's attention and was replaced. Food otherwise ok but certainly not great. Staff were ok with one guy in particular being efficient and helpful. Could do with a bit of attention from a feather duster. A large spider was moving all the way from it's home behind the emergency light above the top table (by the fire place) to near the main entrance without actually touching the ceiling - by walking only on spider's web that was hanging down. At least it kept us entertained while we waited for the food! We've eaten here a number of times before and it's always been much better than this. Don't know if it was just a one-off, or if it's changed hands? I hope it's back up to the previous good standard if we decide to go again.
VERY VERY BUSY; GOOD SIGN THAT MALT SHOVEL POPULAR, BUT !
The service was good and the food was great. If I lived in the area, I would visit again.
Lovely meal very friendly ,helpful staff. Would definitely visit again if in the area.
Great food, great service, great atmosphere, just how a great pub should be
We met up with friends for lunch. Lovely weather so drinks outside before lunch and coffee outside after . Great atmosphere and good service
Wonderful experience, Unusual pub with a great menu including liver and Irish Stews. Welcoming and friendly.
