The place by the cosy fire did not materialise although we were put in a pokey hole by an electric fire. My friend's meal was lovely but mine the liver was a bit tough around the edges. It was my birthday and had also been in a car accident and wanted to be by the fire to keep my aches and pains warm. The coffee was the worse coffee either of us had ever had and just left it. I have been several times before and enjoyed it but yesterday was a let down and we wondered if the owners had changed.
Good food (and lots of it), and good value. Staff kept us up to date with order (sold out at 1300 hrs of one option)Large car park where we were able to park from early morning to go for a walk to work up an appetite.
Excellent service. Excellent food. Lovely ambience, with warm log fires and super beer. What more could you want on a cold snowy lunchtime in December!
The Malt Shovel offered us such a fantastic experience. The food was wonderful and service second to none. We were eating with a one year old and they made us feel very welcome and put us at ease. We will definitely be returning!
Excellent food. One of the best gastropubs in North Yorkshire. Classic old style pub. Friendly people .. really friendly, First class service. Go or don't go.. the choice is yours! Make it the right one .. you only live once.
New management a delight and bending over backwards to retain what's special about this fabulous pub. Roaring fire, great food and big smiles from lovely staff. What more can you want?
As always, a lovely welcome, good food and good service. Plenty of choice on the menu to suit all appetites. Will definitely be back for more excellent hospitality.
We received a warm welcome from a friendly and efficient waitress . On a cold miserable day the bar/restaurant was warm and cosy and the food and beer of very high quality
This was our second visit to the malt shovel and it was excellent, the food and service is wonderful! We will certainly be back again!
Went for my wifes birthday. Fantastic hearty food, thoroughly enjoyed eating in a cosy setting by the log fire. They even put birthday balloons at our table, and a candle on our pudding, fantastic service!! Highly reccommend!
Lovely surroundings, great service, 5 out of 6 courses (for 2 people) stunningly good, one was far too salty and it was dealt with really well. We are returning.
Lovely pub, great food and service.Have visited here a few times ,but was a little disappointed to see the lunchtime menu had been scaled down and so not as much choice. I was so looking forward to their black pudding scotch egg and steak and ale pie but they are no longer on the lunch menu , so felt a little deflated as we had travelled a fair distance and wasn’t really excited by the menu I’m afraid, which is a shame .
It was very quiet, the staff were very attentive and the food was good. We had a great time. The fires were blazing, which have a beautiful warmth.
Great food, Great service and fab company. W'll be back soon. . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

Great food & service at reasonable prices . We did a nice walk from the pub before dining details of which can be found on the pub website. Well worth a visit
The food was absolutely gorgeous. We were given an amuse buche of scallops with a lovely sticky sauce and it was beautifully cooked. The rest of the meal was equally scrumptious. Wine and service were excellent. Would highly recommend a visit.

Scrumptious meal. Superb beer. Excellent value for money. Can’t wait to go again! The calves liver was the best! The lemon posset rounded off the meal superbly.
Great food - you can tell that the ingredients are of the best quality and cooked with passion! The wine list is extensive and the log fire perfect!
The food was good main course was a bit slow coming out, but worth the wait. The young woman in charge was very nice and helpful
Amazing from start to finish.... food excellent, wine choice excellent, service and ambience excellent! Water on the table, homemade bread rolls, complimentary 'amuse bouche' warmest of welcomes all make The Malt Shovel our favourite place to eat in the Harrogate area.
