A warm welcome, happy and efficient service. A most characterful old Inn tastefully furnished and decorated. Delicious food - the fish of the day was excellent.
Enjoyed very much. The food was good and plentiful. Service was friendly and helpful. I liked the extra gravy in the gravy boat for anyone to have as an extra (I am a gravy fan)
Good food, as ever but on this occasion the service was a little slow. Our enjoyment was not diminished and we will keep going, it is a good inn.
Staff friendly and efficient, food excellent with good menu choices. Wine prices not ridiculously high. Layout of the pub/restaurant very attractive with small areas which give a more intimate feel.
The food and service was very good. Please note: The walk no 2 on their website was closer to 5 miles & the directions should have been clearer as we got lost a few times
Much more than just a country pub. Excellent food and good beer. I don't know if it's still associated with Bliekers Smokehouse, but the food was still great.
A lovely meal and pleasant friendly staff. We hadn't visited the pub for many years but were pleased to see it had still retained it's character.
Another great meal with excellent service and hospitality in a lovely setting. Great place to take visitors to the area to for a quality meal.
Very good Family Sunday lunch...met the needs of three generations . Roast beef perfect and wide variety of perfectly cooked vegatables. Service was faultless . Definitely a good spot. been many times and it’s consistently good.
Excellent meal as always. Had guests with us up from Devon who were most impressed with the meal, service and choice on the menu. They have asked to visit again when they are next up.
Nice drive out to a pretty village. The pub has a very nice atmosphere simple menu very good choices for lunch. Service was excellent and good value
Very good food and service and ambience. Only 'problem' was the quantity of the starter (at least for my wife). The pork and steak were cooked to perfection. Would certainly recommend it.
This is just a brilliant place to have Sunday lunch. Superb quality food with great service in a lovely setting. I highly recommend French Onion soup, rib of beef then sticky toffee pudding.
This old country pub is a little gem. The menu is varied with some pub classics and a range of specials that includes fresh fish dishes. Highly recommended.
Service very poor, one course inedible, chicken covered in buckets of barbaque saurce Owner apologizes and adjusted the bill , good Will not be going back
Would have given top marks but no steak pie! I had goegeous chicken pie and my friend had liver, the liver was exceptional. Chunky chips are best ive ever had, gravy lovely & tasty. My other friend had fish gougons and they were not good (a bit soggy) would have been better in a crispy batter. Sticky toffee pudding was lush too
Lovely food however my preferred choice wasn’t available. The chefs special sea bass I ordered, although delicious was disappointing - slightly dry - but not enough to put me off from visiting again. Staff were great and really friendly and accommodating.
lovely atmosphere, friendly staff and great food we will definitely make a return visit and recommend The Malt Shovel to our other family members and friends.
Lovely old place, though quiet/not much atmosphere when we went. Pleasant staff & good value tasty food; my only criticism is that the salad was put on a boiling hot plate!
Pleasant surroundings - friendly staff - efficient service - good food. We thoroughly enjoyed our evening and so did our guests. We will return agian
Service was polite, friendly and very efficient. Was very busy but the service made you feel like you were the only diners. Food of top quality, good prices and very tasty !! Highly recommend and we will definately be returning!
Excellent Sunday lunch and good choice of starters, mains and desserts. We went for starters and roast beef and thoroughly enjoyed them. Great staff and we were well looked after.
Lovely warm welcoming Gastropub on a damp night, great food, great service . Yet again we will return. Hopefully on a dry warm night. Thanks
A really Lovely pub serving a high standard of Excellent Food, good choice of drinks, with very friendly staff would not hesitate to visit again.
We really enjoyed our lunch at the Malt Shovel. It’s a beautiful old pub with a very welcoming atmosphere. The food was terrific and the service excellent. There’s a wide variety of choices available and the standard was high. I’m not often in the Knaresborough area but I would go again if I was.
We came here in February and really enjoyed our evening meal and our lunch today was just as good Lovely food, friendly and helpful staff, great atmosphere Will definitely be back Great atmosphere
Excellent pub - warm atmosphere. Superb food! Always. Nice menu that a bit different. Great real ale - Rudgate Ruby Mild was great! Staff are always great too. One of my favourite places around Harrogate!!
Great food, great service, lovely warmly place. Really enjoyed it - and my friend who had not been before, said its a good choice. Thanks
We had a lovely Sunday lunch with my family. Good honest food, large portions, reasonable prices and very accommodating staff and chef. Happy to recommend it.
Nice atmosphere staff were nice but very average food very slow service. Main courses took one hour to arrive. Excuse was that it was a Saturday night and very one had come at once. We arrived at the same time as another table so that made a 4 and 6. No excuse. Pub was nearly empty at nine o'clock. We know why. Won't go back.
Went with friends who hadn’t been before. They loved the food and atmosphere. The waitress, Sylwia (correct spelling, she’s Polish) is an asset, always friendly and helpful.
Superb food. Excellent, friendly service. Will definitely be back! The liver was cooked perfectly and the steak and ale pie was delicious not to mention the yummy sticky toffee pudding!
A good Sunday menu with some out of the ordinary options which were well presented, full of flavour and competitively priced. The Malt Shovel may be off the beaten track but it is well worth the drive to get there.
Food was outstanding and the staff matched it with the service they provided. Highly recommend it and will be going back, 10 out of 10
Great schnitzel! Nice atmosphere, friendly staff - long wait for food but worth it.
Good, interesting cooking accompanied by cheerful service in the North Yorkshire countryside. Well worth the effort of finding Brearton. Décor - shabby chic or perhaps just tired?
Excellent food and service in a traditional country pub. Great value for money. We will definitely be returning in the near future. Recommend soup and sandwiches.
Quaint surroundings, friendly staff and good food - an overall most enjoyable experience. They coped with a food allergy without fuss and the wine was pleasant too.
Have not been for many months. We were delighted to see how busy The Malt Shovel was, Friday lunch time. Our meal was excellent. Very relaxed service and not chased up with endless drink requests and such like, prefer to have unhurried service too. We shall be back, now to checkout the Polish evening! Thanks MS
Food superb and service great just a little more atmosphere would be good. having said that it was a Tuesday night will be back soon
Another excellent experience from warmth of welcome, ambience, choice and quality of food served and wine list! Highly recommend the Malt Shovel brearton - for any occasion!
The Malt Shovel was excellent in every way as always. Superb food & super kind service. We cannot speak highly enough of this lovely place in the delightful village of Brearton. Thank you.
Fantastic food across the board. Every bite a tasty treat. Excellent value for a high quality meal. Go here for your break from the kitchen and you won't be let down.
Lovely lunch with great friends in a lovely countryside pub. Welcoming and efficient without being rushed. Fantastic starter of monkfish in a light batter. Belly pork for main and chocolate mouse to follow.
lovely food as usual. huge portions. very welcoming. everything freshly prepared and it is a treat to have the free extrs like the homemade bread to start and then a canape. would love to try a pudding but too full!
We went with our three children for my husbands birthday. It is always a bonus when a pub has a children's menu. Lovely local pub, great fresh food and service.
Excellent meal and great friendly service in this lovely country pub in a very nice peaceful spot. Characterful pub with real fires. 4 of us. Beautifully cooked lamb Sunday roast. Good quality children's menu. Reasonably priced for such good quality.
The malt shovel is a lovely pub full of character and oozing Christmas spirit! The staff are lovely and the Sunday lunch that myself, my husband and friends had today was amazing. We will definitely be going back.
Lovely food - delightful ambiance, would definitely recommend to anyone looking for a relaxed and good value venue. Bit out of the way but worth the trip.
Lovely atmosphere, lovely village, great food. Had to wait a while until served but overall excellent night for my wife’s birthday. Would definitely go again
