Starter and main courses were great but the puddings were very disappointing. My Panecotta was bare set, running over the plate and my husband and stepdaughters chocolate brownies were thinner than expected, a bit dry and not warm. Service at the end looked very stretched, they needed more staff on. We ordered coffees but there were no spoons to stir the sugar and after asking for one we ended up having to go to the bar and ask for one as the girl had obviously forgotten it. Be aware the parking is limited and it was very dark in the village to try to find a roadside place. Would love to go in the daylight as it looked a lovely setting
Our table, booked online, was ready, and the staff knew we were coming. We were welcomed, and offered drinks and the day's menu. I chose chicken liver parfait as a starter, and my wife chose the tomato soup. Best chicken liver parfait I've had in a long time, and my wife said the tomato soup was as good as she has ever tasted. We both had grilled salmon which was perfectly cooked and delicious. Green beans and new potatoes were properly cooked i.e. al dente, and provided a good match for the salmon. A bottle of excellent Sauvignon Blanc and a bottle of chilled tap water accompanied the meal, and I finished with a double expresso. I can not fault the meal or the service. Only one down-side - the plates for the main course, although properly hot, were shaped like inverted UFOs with a central pit surrounded by an outward-sloping periphery - why? Nine out of ten for this excellent meal - change the plates for normal ones and I'll change that to ten out of ten. We will be back.
Five of us for dinner on Saturday night (21 Jan 17), the Finches Arms was very full, with people dining in the bar area also. Nevertheless, the service was very good while the food and wines were outstanding. There was a good choice of fare on the menu and we ended up having 3 different starters and 4 different meals between us; ranging from Smoked Salmon, Smoked Mackerel and Scallops starters - to Steak, Pheasant, Sea Bream and Cod for our Mains. Apart from it being a little noisy (it was very full) at times, the atmosphere was very convivial. Overall, a very good night indeed.
Lovely food, great service!! The log fire was gorgeous and it's a really welcoming place, well worth the trip out onto the peninsula. The dining room has great views and we'll definitely visit again
We had a great meal served by happy staff who went out of their way to ensure we enjoyed our first visit to the Finchs Arms. We will be back very soon.
Overall good experience. Parking is a problem - limited on site and restricted nearby. If it was like that in January, August must be a nightmare. Good welcome; service and food.
Lovely setting. Good value for a two course meal but portion size of main course quite small for healthy appetites after a walk round Rutland water!
pleasant atmosphere , service patchy , food a little sparse unless you ordered side dishes side dishes' Overall a pleasant lunch in a pleasant inn
Very relaxed and inviting setting, service was excellent combined with great food. 4 roaring fires which was great on a cold winters day. I will definitely be making a return visit.
Location, food, and service all very good. We met up with old friends and were able to chat over drinks and a meal in comfort all afternoon. The only problem was that the car park is too small and I had to find parking on the road some distance away. However we had a great time - Thank youvery much.
Outstanding food. Fantastic customer service. Beautiful location. 100% will be returning to this wonderful place. Gorgeous accommodation. Lovely wine selection. Spotless. Great value for money.
Promptly seated when we arrived even though we were 20 minutes early. Food was excellent, portion sizes good, if a little on the large side. Only down point, once the dessert menus had been delivered that was the last we saw of otherwise attentive service. Loss of further sales for The Finches Arms.
Really disappointing! The staff were unfriendly, the food shocking and the the service poor. We would not go back. A waste of the beautiful location
Lovely food and well priced.a super setting,a shame that the service was so slow,we waited ages between courses and even longer to find someone to pay the bill to!
Nice choice of food. Well presented. Pleasant staff. Only a short drive out of OAKHAM into Hambledon with a reasonable amount of parking space available
Overall, our party( my wife and I, our daughter and her 3 children aged 8 to 13) enjoyed a very pleasant lunch. However, the food was rather a long time coming and eventually we had to resort to ordering some bread and olives to keep the troops from getting too restless. This also resulted in the adults feeling they should forsake their usual coffees/ cappuccinos at the end of the meal. However, not to make too much of this - we will certainly be returning.
Excellent service with friendly staff. Great menu choices, fine dining style quality and presentation. One of our party was a vegan; she was well accommodated as the chef had created some amazing dishes for her to choose from. A very enjoyable experience.
My wife and I booked for Sunday Lunch. Very good service and excellent food. Staff were friendly and attentive. Thoroughly recommend the whole chicken (for 2) - what a great idea to allow us to carve it ourselves.
Difficult to find.I used my satnav and the postcode placed me in a road 300m away. Because the restaurant is set back from the road behind a tall hedge, and no pub sign we spent a long time searching ,so we were late, but they accommodated us. It was 10 minutes before our order was taken. The lunchtime offer was ok.
Lovely setting and atmosphere. Great food - we had Sunday lunch. Pineapple and mango desert was luscious. Service was a little slow, though it was Sunday lunchtime.
We had a lovely welcome and attentive friendly service with a lovely ambience. The food was first class. We would certainly return when we are next in the area.
Good food and excellent service. The restaurant offers a quiet and peaceful location for a family meal. We were absolutely delighted with the whole experience
Fabulous evening; excellent food and lovely waiting staff. The wine list is a delight with something to suit all tastes and wallets. The setting is beautiful and the restaurant has some lovely features.
We had a lovely evening. The staff were attentive, the food delicious and the atmosphere convivial. We both selected from the set menu and asked for an adjustment to the risotto. It was gorgeous. Many thanks. We'll be back!
I am so often left disappointed with that feeling you have over paid for a meal you could have prepared better at home.. Not so The Finches Arms: Food was quite simply superb! Priced well. Curtious attentive service without being intrusive. Thank you - looking forward to returning!
Lovely environment, lovely food, good pint. Will definitely go back when in the area. We had lunch but would like to also try dinner another time.
Wonderful food and friendly service. Lovely pub and restaurant. Good stop off point for our office outing's 23 mile cycle ride round Rutland Water. Possibly a couple more veggie options?
Always a warm welcome, good food and great service. We started with an early coffee, had a walk round the peninsula and came back for lunch - excellent.
Lovely meal (the smoked salmon looked like art on a plate, the steak was cooked to perfection & the local strawberries were delicious), attentive staff, great atmosphere & ambience in a beautiful setting.
This was our second visit to the Finches. Lovely setting with views over Rutland water. Set lunch menu is great value. Lovely staff too! We shall return 🙁
food was nice, expensive when no vegetables included these are all extra. Portions are small for the money paid. Service abit slow shame for a restaurant in a lovely place
Excellent choice of delicious food, beautifully prepared. Our Italian guest was very impressed too. It is definitely an ideal venue, especially on a sunny day
Lovely pub, great food and excellent service in a quaint location by Rutland Water. Nice choice of beers and wine with the only downside being the hunt for a parking space.
1st time visit and it was our anniversary so wanted somewhere really nice and was not disappointed. location and restaurant were perfect. service was excellent. we both had 3 courses and the food was some of the best weve ever had. Cannot fault it. thank you.
A very enjoyable lunch indeed. Lovely setting and delicious food. Will definitely return for another meal . Range of food was excellent and dietary needs were met for one of our party
Excellent location and good variety of menu choices. It was a beautiful day when I visited so very busy. The waiting staff though very pleasant were struggling to keep pace with clearing tables and taking orders. The food was fresh and tasty and worth the wait.
Only make this your destination if you enjoy being ignored. Customer service, what is that? Left both hungry and thirsty but not sure the staff would have noticed when we vacated the table.
We were a little late for the booking, but the staff didn't seem to mind and made us feel comfortable by giving us the option to have a drink in the Bar first. The clientele were very affable and may have been locals. Nice feel and atmosphere. Someone slipped up by playing Christmas Carols for a while (September?). :-) The quality of food and table service was good, but the table a little small with poorly positioned legs for comfortable sitting. Just one at each corner would be so much simpler. The price reflected the standard. Not overly keen on food being served on Wooden platters, except cheese and biscuits maybe. We would certainly visit again and also consider a night stay to enjoy the area walking and /or cycling.
Food was excellent and location is lovely, but unfortunately the service was quite poor. We had to wait a long time for our order to be taken and almost gave up on having dessert! Staff were pleasant but seemed unorganised and when we went to the bar to pay ( didn't want to have to wait any more for bill to be brought to table) the drinks had been missed off the bill and it seemed to take several minutes to sort it out! Pity, because food was good.
My family and I had an excellent meal at a reasonable price. I have already recommended The Finch's Arms to friends. It's a "must do" if you are visiting Oakham / Rutland.
This was the most recent of many trips to Finches and once again most enjoyable. We were a table of four having lunch ( started at 1:00pm and eventually left 6:00pm ) three of us choose the alacart menu and one the set menu of the day , nobody was disappointed , we all had a super meal from starters through mains to pudding and of course good selections of beers and wines. The staff are terrific and friendly with nothing too much trouble. Oh almost forgot the setting, terrific overlooking Rutland Water and set in a beautiful stone village. Yes the Finches has everything you could possibly want. We will most certainly be back and soon.
Great meal good service, fantastic setting, looking out over The reservoir , with the sun out under an umbrella, with a pint of good ale, what could be better
Service could have been better seem to wait a long time for the meal to arrive, time scale seem to be set as if we had ordered starters.
Service food and atmosphere superb. Car parking impossible on a Sunday Lunch time and i had to park on double yellow lines outside but i have a Blue Badge. No Disabled car park at the inn itself as i could see.
The food was great and the younger waiters and waitresses were really helpful, but we were not happy with the service from the person who is either the owner or restaurant manager as he tried to rush us to choose what we wanted to eat and was quite brusque.
Absolutely fabulous lunch as always, service was excellent as was the attention to detail was excellent too. I would not hesitate to recommend eating here.
The food was well presented and beautifully cooked. The atmosphere was great ant the service was top class, we will certainly recommend the Finch's Arms to others.
We loved our recent visits to The Finches for lunch, it has to be our new favourite place to eat.... the food is excellent and the staff very friendly and efficient.
Food was excellent but service was extremely poor. Attractive restaurant with varied menu but thought the waiting staff seemed to have forgotten us. A shame as I have heard many good things about the Finches Arms.
An attractive pub/restaurant in delightful surroundings with a relaxed atmosphere. A good choice of food which was well presented and very tasty! I'd definitely go back to the Finch's Arms👌
