We enjoyed a very pleasant evening with lovely food- food with difference. We will most certainly return and thank you for the kind attention given to us.
Disapppointing - Was overcharged twice! They couldn't get the bill correct! Third attempt right. So lesson is - check the bill very carefully especially when you are being charged £25 extra!!!!
Very good , simple food , just what you want for relaxing lunch , also good unobtrusive service , lovely , light airy dining room
So many tempting dishes, all well presented and cooked to perfection, great atmosphere and attentive service. All four diners said they would dine here again to try something different next time.
Food, drink and atmosphere amazing. Slightly over priced starters and desserts. Service very good - attentitive and accurate. Would visit again. Easy and reliable booking system
Main course was absolutely delicious, but puddings were very bland. Service was very poor, we had to keep asking for menus and our drinks were forgotten.
We had a light lunch, so not a wide spread of experience. But the service was excellent and our hot sandwiches were very well presented and delicious. All the ingredients were fresh and high quality.
The food was "tired" they admitted it was at the end of the day so we had what was left. The Pork was fatty and the potatoes and yorkshire reheated, one spoonful of gravy. The web site says they serve food until 8 on Sunday we arrived at 6.30. Despite information on the website and the board outside anyone arriving after 6.30 without a reservation were being turned away. You got the impression they don't want to do food on Sunday evening. If they don't why not just close for food.Staff were friendly only good point.
Very Good Food, varied menu at reasonable prices. The service was prompt, efficient and friendly. the environment is cosy and well appointed. Well worth a visit
We enjoyed good food and service for our Sunday lunch. Comfortable seating and a nice atmosphere. Excellent choice of wines. And centrally located in Oakham
A lovely family-friendly restaurant, with excellent facilities and delicious food. There is a good choice of meals, ranging from the usual Sunday carvery to fish and vegetarian. Children are catered for with the minimum of fuss and there is plenty of space between the tables. The service is efficient and unobtrusive and you can take as much time as you like. All in all, a very pleasant Sunday lunch.
The personnel and the ambience of the premises were most acceptable. The starter, parsnip soup, was rather bland. The bellied pork was disappointing -- only 1 of 3 people liked it. The fish/ cheese in a pot was acceptable to the 3 people who ordered it, although it could have benefitted from something on the side. One person had spaghetti bolognaise, which looked rather strange, but may have been enjoyed. The 2 mixed fruit crumble/ice cream were excellent. It is unlikely that we would return to this restaurant and, if asked , we would not recommend it. Maybe it was just the Monday menu.
Whilst the food was good we felt there were long waits between courses, we were sat in the bar area so possibly the waiting staff were being concentrated in the restaurant area. Bill was incorrect too but was corrected when challenged.
It was out of its depth with crowds of conflicting customers- drinkers and eaters. More standing space neded at bar? More staff needed on a very busy night.
Really enjoyed the food but the service was a bit sloppy. Also, we could hear the music from the kitchen which the staff often danced too. A little off putting.
Delicious food and a great ambience. Set in the heart of Oakham and just what the town needed. We also love their sister pub, The Finchs in Hambleton.
Took 45 mins for food to arrive - very busy, not much room, we had to push our chairs right in so that people could get by. Also, quite noisy. Food was good however.
Absolutely lovely, food was delicious. Bit on the slow side with service but we weren't in any hurry so it didn't matter. Will definitely be returning...
Easter Monday lunch We had a very nice lunch, chicken breast sandwich with triple cooked chips - delicious! The service was good and the place had a nice buzz as it was quite busy
Plenty of rustic traditional wholesome food, well presented with excellent customer service and a friendly atmosphere. Relaxing environment in this busy restaurant with a wide selection of drinks which included some local real ales.
Our Sunday lunch was excellent, beautifully presented. Vegetables done, not over or under cooked. The only down point, is the door that opens onto the car park, which seemed to be on constant use, which was disturbing and draughty.
Excellent menu and food. Quite an experience and different. The staff were very attentive considering that it was a Saturday night and busy. Our only complaint would be the noise from a young clientele. We hope that this was a one off as their appeared to be a party at one large table.
Great service, ambiance and food. Not being from the area, we found the parking quite difficult to find, apart from that the experience was great. Thanks
A very nice hotel, friendly staff and good choice of food and drink. for nice weather there is a lovely garden area. Would visit again.
Food very good but service was patchy on a very busy Friday night, forgetting things promised and asking for bill 3 times. Bill not accurate
This was my first visit to The Admiral Hornblower. The food was great and the service attentive. Highly recommended, I certainly plan to visit again.
Good service, good food though could have done with more bread with the Camembert cheese starter. They forgot to put 5 starters and puddings on the bill so had to point this out, would have thought they would have given us a bit of discount for being so honest, but not!
The service and food was good on Friday evening with one exception that the member of the party was very sick in the night after having moules which is one of the risks with that dish.
Lovely atmosphere and great food. Just feel the food was over priced for what you got. I don't mind paying a little more for something, but it was to be worth it. It's a shame because it's put me and my wife off going back there again.
Slow service and small portion sizes. Prices too high - having to pay extra for potatoes with your meal! Some of the staff were off-hand.
Quality of food was very good but service was intermittent , Fish in batter overcooked yet risotto perfect, desserts very good. Pity attention from waiting staff was a bit hit and miss.
Friendly service in a smart gastropub setting. Despite it being a busy Saturday evening, we were neither rushed nor ignored. Food was tasty, and the whole meal was reasonably priced.
Great food and service. Roast beef was cooked to perfection. Not the old carvery but cooked and served to order. Higher price than of old but fair value for money.
The atmosphere in the hornblower was good. The food is lovely, however the menu was quite small. Staff were professional and efficient. Wine choice was good. Would defiantly recommend and will be back.
Very good menu choice, friendly staff and lovely surroundings - a marked improvement on the previous ownership and running of the venue - hope it continues to improve
Friendly, polished service and fine food from a very appealing menu. The Hornblower is now looking and feeling smart and characterful in line with such a beautiful period building.
Lovely decoration, friendly staff, efficient service and lovely food. We had a variety of starters and mains and all were enjoyed. Would certainly come back and recommend to others
A first visit for 5 friends and we all enjoyed the surroundings, the atmosphere, the service and, most importantly, the food! We will be coming again!
Wonderful place, fabulous meal. Lovely country drive. One of the best Suday lunches we have had. Looking forward to returning in the future. Highly recommended.
Service was very good. Staff were friendly and helpful. Food was excellent. Set up, decor etc. very stylish yet still retains a proper drinking pub atmosphere. Just what Oakham needed.
Great staff, lovely light renovation and food was great and yummy
The food as always was excellent. The service was not as good as it usually is due to a number of inexperienced staff. The service is usually excellent with staff being very welcoming, attentive and efficient.
We were a party of 6 and everyone was very happy with their choice from the interesting menu. Portion sizes rather large so unable to try desserts!!
Excellent service High quality food Attentive servers Lovely ambience Very nice outside space Would highly recommend a visit to the Admiral Hornblower for any occasion.
Excellent service, good atmosphere and interesting mix of pub grub and more refined cuisine. Will definitely return. One of several decent pubs in Oakham. Heartily recommended.
Lovely food excellent surroundings Service charming but a little disjointed Too many people tried to serve us which caused a little confusion Will visit again
Great ambience for a sunny bank holiday lunch. Spacious, bright and clean. Friendly service. Good fresh food in generous well presented portions and great wine choices available by the glass. Would go again.
We were looked after very well, and the meal was excellent. 3 of us had the fish and chips, which were very very nice indeed.
