It has closed down!! Turned up for my birthday and place was locked! Went to Chichester Harbour who gave us a lovely meal!! Thank you
We were expecting a restaurant. as advertised, but only basic pub/bar meals were on offer. This is not a proper restaurant, more like a pub/wine bar
First time we had tried this restaurant and were pleasantly surprised by the high standard of food and service. We were having a pre-theatre lunch and will certainly come back again.
A great restaurant, very pleasant staff, food was of good quality and reasonably priced. Well looked after all night, food arrived quickly and left just the right time between courses. Will definitely use again.
Very good service, lovely food, and not rushed. The pre-theatre menu good value for money and and even better when accompanied with their half price cocktails.
there was a very nice atmosphere. The food and service was very good, but they just need to check that the glass where is spotless and make sure the waiters are informed about the food on the menu so they can answer questions.
We have been to this restaurant before and had very good meals and service. However our experience this time was not good. We waited more than 30 minutes after our meal had been ordered to be served. The pesto linguini was so extremely unpalatable, it must have been cooked hours before serving as it was very over cooked and slimy. My partner’s chips looked over cooked, although he was reassured that they were supposed to be very dark on the outside. Waiting staff were apologetic and offered a free dessert as I was unable to eat my pasta, but as we were short of time I declined the offer. We were given £3.50 off the bill as compensation, which I thought was a little inadequate as I had not eaten any of the pasta.
Service was good. Tomato soup was very good. I had calves liver which was very nice but spoiled by bacon in the mashed potato. This was not specified on the menu. I personally do not like the flavour of bacon with liver so this spoiled the meal for me. The manageress did discuss this with the chef and said they had taken note of my comment. In my view it is important that the menu identifies ingredients .,
The food is always fresh and delicious here and the surroundings are bright and modern. They tried very hard to accommodate my food allergy, which was much appreciated. Will continue to eat there regularly.
Disappointed in the menu. Seems to cater mainly for theatre goers. The other menu was quite basic and much was no longer to be had at 8pm on a Saturday night which I found surprising. On the upside the staff were very pleasant.
Excellent food spoilt by poor service and a very noisy environment. Is No 1 a bar or a restaurant? Can the two be separated in some way?
Food was amazing and staff were really friendly and welcoming, and have a great service. A great place to go for a special night out.
Good service, nicely timed for the theatre, food was pretty good too - though the steak got the best rating from 2 of my guests! Thank you!
Went here for a pre theatre meal, thoroughly recommend it, friendly staff, great atmosphere, food was delicious from the pre theatre menu (good choice of food)
Have used this restaurant several times now for pre-theatre dining - it's friendly, efficient service means we always get to the theatre on time and without rushing. Good quality cooking and value for money.
Service was slow. Also the bill was wrong and had to calculate it ourselves. However, the meal was delicious, ambience great. We have been before and will go again.
It was not up to the standard we have come to expect from this restaurant. We will not be returning again in the near future or recommending to friends any more.
Lovely meal. We had a nice table which was ready for us when we arrived. The waiter was very charming and friendly but seemed a little unsure of what he was doing - possibly new? - and he kept asking someone else behind the bar questions. The food was good and came in good time (pre-theatre supper). Reasonably priced too - I will use this restaurant again.
Excellent service and a lovely lunch, competitively priced. We love coming here prior to matinées at Chichester Festival Theatre. Quite busy today, so I imagine more theatregoers have discovered how convenient No.1 Northgate is!
Too busy short staffed and not a particularly pleasant experience. I think they struggle with the pre theatre crowd which is really unfortunate as it's a lovely place
Not a good experience - needed more staff, just three young people working the restaurant and bar with a busy pre- theatre crowd. Only just got our two courses within an hour and a half! I make a better beef bourgignon at home! Won't be returning.
Venue good, handy for Chichester Festival theatre. Staff friendly and very efficient. Nothing was too much trouble. Food however was mediocre. Very bland. Not good value at all. Will go once more to see if it was a bad night for chef.
Good reception. Food lacking in seasoning and rather large portions. May return but probably use alternative venues. Seemed largely used by young people having half-price drinks! Could do better.
Nice surroundings complimented with attentive staff. Good menu which cumulated in a great value meal. Wide range of cocktails on offer which attracted a buzzy client all which added to a exciting atmosphere.
Service was poor...quite clearly trainees were working. Long time for bill to arrive. Lay out of the tables etc not conducive ...very cafe like for morning coffee!
We arrived early, but with a tight timetable, as we had to be back at the theatre for the next play in the Ayckbourn Trilogy. We were welcomed warmly, shown to our table quickly, the food was delicious, the service friendly and speedy, despite the fact that they were so busy with other guests who needed to get back to the theatre too. After an excellent two course dinner and nice bottle of wine we were back at the theatre in plenty of time. Thoroughly recommend. MGJ
Unattentive staff, food quality very good, however portion sizes inconsistent. Some too large, some too small. Good choice of wine, and good quality wines. Nice ambience. Prices to quantity of food, out of balance. For example, the Salmon starter should be bigger to justify the £6 price tag. Also the Sausage and Mash could have the gravy served in a jug, as mine was drowning in the bowl. I also recommend no veg with it. The veg should be served as a side, not part of the main, which would avoid the veg being submerged under the gravy. All in all, the visit was ok, however it could have been so much better. I suggest you use a “mystery shopper” to gain a more refined dining experience for customers.
A good choice for pre-theatre dinner: the menu changes regularly and the food is well presented and cooked. If anything for our taste the main portions were slightly too large. Service is friendly and once ordered course come without excessive delay- which is good when needing to meet a curtain up deadline. One slight moan from a personal point of view - I wish they would not keep coming to enquire if 'everything is alright?'
Nice staff and good service. The food was bland, mediocre and expensive for what it was. The furniture wasn’t comfortable, the table wasn’t pleasant to lean on.
Slow service and table that came in after us got served first-short of staff(only 2)at 5.45 pm,when it was really busy.Pie of the day sold out already and several dishes that we wanted to eat on the on line menu missing.Nice place but wont be back
The restaurant was very busy and didn't seem to have enough staff to cope. We went straight to our main course as we were worried that if we ordered a starter as well we would not finish in time to leave for the theatre. This was the right decision as we only got to the theatre, five minutes before the play started. The food was fine, but not great. We were charged £80 for a £26 bottle of wine. When queried, they changed the bill but there was no apology.
The building, the atmosphere and the ambience were very good. The food was okay but no more than that. The helpings were very large and both of us left some of our food because we could not cope with the quantities.
Arrived on time but were seated at a unmade table in another room without menus or water. After waiting for 10 minutes for any service, we left. Shockingly bad experience.
Was a great evening couldn't have had better service the fish soup was brilliant and same for the sea food platter platter only down side was the cocktails were a bit pricey. would definetly go back again.
Ambience was pub noisy with drinkers at the bar giving it a feel of being in a pub. Food was ok but a tad overpriced. It's caught between being a restaurant and a pub/wine bar.
Pre theatre meal which was served in good time scale in pleasant atmosphere with attentive staff. Very busy forgot our drinks so gave them to us on the house. Would return
Food was amazing. We had a fantastic time there, lovely building and staff. The manager was very good and professional. I would recommend this place
happy, busy, and friendly service; there is a buzz at No. 1 on a Friday evening - people popping in after work or dinner before the show at CFT; lovely place and handy for the theatre. Lovely food and good wine.
Good food, good value and pleasant staff. The pre-theatre menu is extensive enough to havevsimething for everyone without being boring. There is also the A la Carte menu for crab, lobster etc. Willbe back.
We waited 15 minutes to be offered a menu. The excuse was they had a large party (estimate 20 people) and that table had all the menus. We were asked if we wanted to order drinks and pointed out we hadn't been shown a wine list. Then a good percentage of the wines were not available - no delivery from the supplier apparently - and when we DID choose, one of the two we ordered was not available either. The starters arrived - nothing sensational, to put it mildly. Then the main courses, one of which was wrong: Chicken Caesar was ordered, Chicken with pancetta arrived. That was replaced, but then the bill reflected the wrong dish (at nearly £3 more expensive.) All in all, a most unsatisfactory experience from a restaarant I have visited several times before. But I shan't be going again. Needless to say, we left no tip.
A pleasant meal in a lovely environment, very handy for theatre. Our order was lost but the staff sorted quickly and we were happy with their response.
Restaurant still bright and service good but food from pre -thetatre menu was mediocre for most of our table of four. I must say that the home made mushroom soup and cod, in my case, was good value and well produced.
An excellent and enjoyable meal in a very nice environment. The service was a bit amateurish but will doubtless improve. We shall certainly visit again
We've always had a good measl here but this time unfortunately it was not. Starters fine but main courses very poor. Service was very good.
Manager/owner was very on the ball good menu and food was excellent. I would definitely go again and certainly would recommend. Next time cocktails in the afternoon
We went pre-theatre on a Saturday evening, the restaurant was very busy, we arrived early and were shown to our table no problem. The service was very efficient, food very good and a reasonable price. Location is ideal for the theatre and will go again. We loved the loos situated in the old bank vaults.
Tasty food. Buzzing before the theatre, so makes for a noisy experience. Very friendly service. Happy to discover that Prosecco and cocktails were on special offer at half price.
Cannot fault the service, staff or food. Prices of food and drinks acceptable. Good selection of specials on blackboard. Good sized portions. Very varied menu. Something for all tastes.
Good choice of menu, friendly staff & great atmosphere. Also very handy for a pre theatre meal if you're going to the Festival Theatre or just meeting up with friends.
After reading other reviews, we decided to eat at No1 after such good feedback. How disappointing. We complained twice about the length of time waiting for our main courses, 40 minutes to us was unacceptable. We also heard other people complaining. I have never left a review about anywhere before but felt other customers should be warned. The food was ok but sadly not good enough to make us want a return visit.
