Friendly, attentive staff who made us feel welcome immediately on arrival. Food was excellent. Lovely atmosphere in one of York's many historic buildings. Happy to recommend 31 Castlegate to other diners.

Delightful romantic gem right next to Castle Museum - come before 7pm for the set dinner! The setting is intimate and cozy and the service wonderful

Food was very nice,decent size and quite reasonably priced.Red wine, chicken and mushroom terrine and the trio of venison could have been a bit warmer - just to bring the flavours out.My medium to rare fillet steak was on medium side,but tasted very nice.Not sure about the place itself - a bit dated.

Lovely customer service - friendly but not intrusive. It was all beautifully cooked and I want to make a special mention of the fish which was cooked perfectly.

Starter of 'crispy' pork which was just hard and completely swamped in a very sweet sauce was a disappointment. Lamb main had a sauce that was lacking any real depth of flavour and was totally washed away by the courgettes - need to work on the sauce and think about a different vegetable accompaniment. It was an OK meal without being one to remember.

We had been meaning to give this restaurant a try for some time and are now pleased that we eventually got around to it. The ambience is a little odd perhaps due to the height of the room, but the service and food were both very good, and I thought, good value for money.

We exprienced a friendly welcome and professiona servicel. The food was delicious., we had the lunch time menu. The restaurant was pleasant and clean. We very much enjoyed it.

We thought the staff were a bit over friendly, asking us if everything was ok too many times. The food was average I'm afraid, although I did like the dessert.

A lovely and friendly restaurant. Really nice food and a good selection of wines. Great value if you select off the set menu but even the a la carte menu represents value for money. Will go again when back in York.

Great food, nice atmosphere and excellent value for money. There was a good choice of a la carte options and good specials too. The venison was delicious but the star of the show was the peanut butter parfait. Ummmmmm!

Lovely food, well priced set menu...we did encounter a piece of plastic in our jug of water but we'll let it slide as the rest made up for it.

Extremely friendly yet professional staff, we had the set dinner menu which is very competitively priced, the quality of food is excellent and portions are not skimped on. Conveniently situated near a public car park this restaurant ticked all the boxes for us. We'll definitely be returning.

Came for a few days away and based our choice on distance from where we stayed. (Hotel Indigo) aswell as trip advisor rating. We were not disappointed. Absolutely brilliant food. Service was very good also.

Our first visit to 31 Castlegate and we weren't disappointed. We opted for the 3 courses for £17.95 which was excellent value. Ham Hock to start, followed by chicken with goats cheese and sun dried tomatoes and creme brûlée to finish. Service was great too. Would definitely recommend a visit.

The restaurant was amazing; we went for a Mother's Day meal with my fussy mum but there was plenty of choice on the menu, which was well priced and amazing quality. The service was also brilliant and the atmosphere was friendly and relaxed. I would 100% recommend visiting here and am already planning my next visit myself

Service perfect. Food even better. Lamb rump with sweet potato sumptuous. Mackerel and rhubarb starter a beautiful combination of 2 of my favourite foods. Best meal out for a long time. Go and eat.

The place is a little dated and in need of an overhaul we found the food a little mixed my wife's main sea bream was very rich, I ordered the lemon cheese cake for afters which turned out to be the chefs take on it and not as expected which was around 50% to big, not the worst place I have been in York, this being meltons 2 which is definitely one to miss, the web site and testimonials present it better than it is, unfortunately we do have very high standards, the lack of atmosphere was also something which needs to be addressed, the service couldn't be questioned, hence why I gave a good tip, hope this helps, I always try to be honest

It was busy, but even so, the service was a little slow - about 15-20 minutes just to get a menu, and 45 minutes for a starter. We had to ask for the complimentary bread as it wasn't given to us. That said, the food was lovely, really, really nice.

The meal was superb! My husband had the Filet Beef Stroganoff and said it was the best he'd ever tasted! The staff were very attentive and the atmosphere was good. Would thoroughly recommend this restaurant.

I visited with work colleagues for a farewell lunch, the menu has lots of choice to cover all tastes. The food was great and very good value. I would recommend.

This was my third or fourth time dining at 31 Castlegate. It is always a lovely dining experience and the set menu is filled with excellent choices. My husband had the confit duck as a main and I had the sea bass fillet. Both were quite good although the duck was seasoned better than my fish which, on this evening, was a bit bland. The same was true of my starter: the mushroom tart needed salt! Service was excellent and we will return.

Excellent food in a restaurant with real character. The Valentine's Day set menu was delicious, I had the soup starter, followed by beef medallions and finished with the sticky toffee pudding and each course was perfect.

Really enjoyed the great food, lovely selection, the platter and the lamb were amazing and we had great service from the friendly staff there at Castlegate 31.

overall a very good experience,although not many people in the restaurant we did not feel isolated,the restaurant has a very good atmosphere.The serivce was efficient and welcoming, We had the set menu which was of very good value having the sea bass which could not be faulted.The wine was also very good value and a good selection. Will return if back visiting York.

Delicious food, tentative service and romantic ambiance led to a truly wonderful night. Price was reasonable and the fillet steak was mouthwatering (and cooked to perfection). We'll be back!

Came for our anniversary in January 2016 service and the food was spot on no complaints at all would recommend to friends and family and we will return.

Friendly and attentive service. Everyone enjoyed their meals. Well-priced. The haddock chowder and rib eye steaks were the most enjoyed by our party. An excellent meal.

Another reviewer was absolutely correct - it looks nothing from the outside but inside everything is perfect. Tables not too near to each other, food and drink excellent and staff very helpful - I would recommend this restaurant to anyone, we were celebrating an anniversary and it was a lovely night and, for the centre of York, not overly expensive - we had the set menu!!

The food was very good. However in spite of reserving by phone and by e mail we were not expected and put in the downstairs room in full view of the kitchen and next to the toilets. A romantic evening had been planned but somewhat tarnished by the setting.

As a party of 10 old friends meeting up for a reunion in York we had a lovely evening. Excellent food and perfect front of house. This is my 3rd visit to 31 Castlegate and it would certainly be my first choice when visiting this beautiful city. Thank you very much.
